Motivation Is a Lie

Author: Brianna Bernard

Many of us wait to eat healthier and exercise until we feel like it. We use the excuse, “I’m just not motivated right now,” and we wait until things slow down at work, the kids go back to school, or COVID-19 is behind us, to start taking better care of ourselves. But motivation is a lie.

Successful people don’t feel more motivated than you do. They succeed because whether they feel like exercising and eating healthily or not, they do it anyway. They force themselves to do the things they don’t feel like doing EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

When we are young, our parents make us do the things we don’t feel like doing. They force us to brush our teeth, to do our homework, to make our beds and clean our rooms. Then, we grow up and become young adults and think, “This is gonna be so great! Now I can do whatever I want!” And then, we realize there’s no one around to force us to do the stuff we don’t feel like doing anymore.

The prerequisite to reaching your weight or fitness goals is not motivation, somewhere along the line, we received the memo that in order to create change, we should feel driven. We should feel like eating chicken and broccoli and working out. But the truth of the matter is… you might never want to go for a run, meal prep, or eat apples instead of donuts. So, if you’re waiting to feel motivated to get started, you could be waiting for the rest of your life.

Whether you feel like exercising and eating healthily or not, you have the power to force yourself to do it anyway. And every time we make a promise to ourselves and follow through with it, we build confidence and self-trust – that when we say we are going to do something, we follow-through. Consistency with your nutrition and exercise creates change in your mind and body – and that gives us motivation to continue the healthy habits we’ve created, whether we feel like it or not.
