The Impact of the Pandemic on Men’s Sexual Health

by Dr Shirin Lakhani

Leading cosmetic doctor, intimate health specialist, and men’s sexual health expert, Dr Shirin Lakhani, has reported a five-fold increase in enquiries for her revolutionary P-Shot procedure – which sees blood injected into their penis – from men who can no longer blame work and travel pressures for their problems in the bedroom.

Now she reveals how young men have really been affected by the pandemic…

With the country living under the cloud of a pandemic for the last six months, people’s lives have been impacted exponentially.

Lockdown resulted in men being forced to adjust to new home-working environments, to being furloughed or made redundant, not to mention being forced to cope with the added stress and worry that these change in circumstances has brought.

And while young, fit men aren’t generally at risk of serious complications from Covid they are by no means immune to being impacted in other ways – namely their sexual health.

Just last week news reports stated that Gonorrhoea cases in England hit a record high, with more than 70,936 cases reported last year, up more than a quarter from 2018. Although these figures were taken from pre-Covid data, it highlights how much other areas of our health have been overlooked in recent months.

Whilst women face a potential timebomb as a result of missed smear tests, men’s intimate health has also been put on the backburner which is why it’s more important than ever to talk about these issues and how to get help.

Since lockdown restrictions have been eased I’ve received up to ten enquiries a day from men enquiring about the P-Shot procedure. I put this increase down to the fact that lockdown has seen men have no excuse for their inability to perform.

A lot of the men I’m hearing from have struggled with sexual intercourse for years but have until now managed to hide their problem behind the fact that they were tired from work or because they were physically away a lot due to work. During lockdown problems such as these are impossible to ignore.

This is just one of many of the sexual health problems that are being accentuated for men at present, which is why I’m keen to break the taboos so that men know what is normal and what’s not, and how to get help if needed.

Problem: Erection issues

For couples isolated together there may be the expectation from one partner to have more sexual activity than usual. This can put pressure on anyone who is finding it difficult to perform in the bedroom.Once upon a time Sexual Dysfunction, or the difficulty by an individual or couple during any normal sexual activity, including pleasure, desire, preference, arousal or orgasm, was very much a taboo subject.

At times like this people are turning to social media more and beginning to realise how many options there are out there to help treat Sexual Dysfunction. And with studies showing that at least a third of us have experienced these types of problems at some point in our lives, it’s certainly widespread. Many men and women don’t talk about their intimate health and find it embarrassing to seek help. But we should feel comfortable enough to talk about the issues we experience with intimate health and everyone should be allowed to enjoy sex.

Solution:

There are now many treatments available to help treat sexual dysfunction. Being comfortable in your own skin is a major factor in promoting sexual health. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about body confidence, good health and communication with your partner.

Suppose you have a problem with getting or maintaining an erection. In that case, The P-Shot® (or Priapus Shot®) is a pioneering treatment which is helping men across the world to gain self-confidence by giving them back their sex drive, improving erectile issues such as impotence or the inability to maintain an erection, while also sometimes offering the added benefit of increased size and girth.

The treatment, costing £1500, is a non-surgical procedure which involves injecting the penis with the patient’s own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), which helps to improve the health and vitality of the penis and naturally stimulates penis rejuvenation. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) found in the blood is used to stimulate the growth of new, younger tissue and the increase of blood flow, which ultimately strengthens the erection and enhances the appearance.

Problem: Ignoring a problem

Given the current climate a lot of us are more likely to put off seeking medical care for a problem that is causing us pain, discomfort or embarrassment.

Solution:

If in doubt contact your GP. Sometimes intimate issues like bacterial infections or lumps can’t just go away on their own. It’s also important to not allow problems to worsen. If you have concerns, it is important to call your doctor.

Problem: Spots on intimate places

Most of us get spots down below at some time or another but prolonged periods of sitting down can increase these.

Solution:

These can be a result of a few things, from acne and ingrown hairs, to cysts and STIs. But most importantly, if there’s a spot down there no matter how tempting it is you should try and avoid popping it. Doing so can result in pushing bacteria further into the skin, spreading infection, or worse. If a spot down there is really bothering you don’t be afraid to seek help with a doctor.

Problem: Painful and ingrown pubic hair

The fact that pubic hair hardly ever makes an appearance in online porn means that many people nowadays are opting to remove theirs too. Whether that’s by shaving, waxing or epilating, it’s important to beware of the risks.

Removing pubic hair is a very popular trend. Whilst this is harmless in theory it’s worth bearing in mind the side effects. These include ingrown hairs which can become itchy and infected, and there can be extreme irritation during the regrowth stage.

Solution:

If using hair removal creams or products always take extreme care. If hair becomes uncomfortable as it regrows exfoliate the area in order to prevent ingrown hairs.

Problem: Incontinence

It’s believed that between 2 and 15% of men aged 15 to 64 have incontinence. There a number of different types of incontinence including stress incontinence, caused by sneezing and coughing, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence which results in frequent or constant dribbling of urine, functional incontinence whereby you can’t make it to the toilet in time, and mixed incontinence which includes a mixture of the above symptoms.

Many men feel too embarrassed to talk about this with their doctor. But in some cases it can be an indication of something more serious such as prostate cancer so it is always important to get it checked out immediately.

Solution:

There are a number of treatments available for this, from therapy if the condition is more of a psychological one, to the P-Shot which is plasma therapy and Emsella which is a non-invasive chair that uses HIFEM technology to build the muscles in the area. The main thing is that in this day and age no man should suffer these symptoms in silence. They can not only impact a man physically but also over a prolonged period of time place a huge pressure on mental health.
